Goa Carnival 2019 will begin on Saturday 2 March and ends on Tuesday 5 March
Goa Carnival Celebrations is a 3 day long festival. It is a festival of music, fun and dance. Introduced by the Portuguese, Goa Carnival is now the only Carnival that is celebrated in the entire country and also celebrated across Goa without any communal barriers.
It usually starts off on Fat Saturday known as ‘Sabado Gordo’ and concludes on Fat Tuesday known as ‘Shrove Tuesday’, just before Ash Wednesday that starts with the first day of the season of Lent.It is considered that Goa comes under the rule of King Momo during the Carnival period. King Momo preaches the message “Kha, piye aani majja kar” (English: “Eat, drink and make merry”).The Carnival is set to motion with a procession headed by King Momo. This procession is flocked by dancers dressed up as fortune tellers, hawkers, women, and older men in funny clothes. The preparations for the carnival begin from December.
The carnival marks the celebrations before the month of Lent, which characterizes fasting or abstinence from meat. Lent ends in Easter and is significant for the Catholics. The Carnival is a major tourist attraction drawing thousands of tourists from all over the country.
Hotels and tickets need to be booked in advance as a mad rush of tourists make accommodation scarce and expensive.
