The longer I spent time with children in my clinic the stronger I believe that there is something seriously wrong in the way we perceive what true health is. We have gone wrong in understanding how the body works. We have stopped believing in the beautiful healing principles that govern the body. We have forgotten the healing powers that lie within each one of us.
Remember the time as children we got a cut or we bruised our knee all we did was wash the wound clean. Today we are made to believe that unless we use an antiseptic a strong chemical medicated lotion the wound shall not heal.
The first sign of a cold and the parents rush to medicate their child. The first sneeze and out come the nasal drops, nasal sprays and balms. WAIT….. its time you understand what’s happening.
The mucus secreting glands in the respiratory tract are placed there for a specific purpose to trap the bacteria, the viruses and then to flush them out of the body through a runny nose and sneeze. But what do we do? The first thing we do is to dry up the mucus allowing a free entry of germs into the lower respiratory tract leading to more serious ailments.
Whenever a child gets exposed to a bacterial or viral infection it generates an immune response (rising fever is a good example) creating a hostile environment for the infection. Our immune systems are so intelligent that the fever in most cases will only elevate to the point of damaging the invading germ leaving the healthy cells unharmed. If we abstain from intentionally lowering the fever by using over the counter medication, our bodies will overcome the infection more quickly and more efficiently.
Another common symptom that scares parents is cough. Wikipedia states
If it is protective than why would we try to suppress the cough? Why not try some warm water and honey instead?
We are creatures of habit. We force these over the counter or prescription medications to our children with the belief that they will feel better at the expense of their health. We suppress their immune systems responses to an invading agent and attempt to get them well by bypassing its function thus weakening it.
We have forgotten the term natural immunity.
When we wait it allows the immune system to respond to invading germs the way it was programed to respond. Not only does this allow for ‘practice’ of immune responses, which will be necessary for protection, but it also plays a critical role in teaching the immature immune response what things can be best ignored as harmless without any hypersensitive reaction. When children are not allowed to wait for the immune system to respond we weaken the immune system opening up the body to a myriad of diseases due to either lowered immunity or due to over use of medications.
Just like any other muscle in our body, the immune system needs to be exercised in order to fully develop and become strong enough to resist illness and disease. The best way to do this is to allow the interaction between the germs and the immune system. That’s when the immune system responds and creates a defense system that shall always keep your child healthy. That’s how natural immunity is achieved. That’s how children remain healthy.
Its time we shed away our fears and trust our bodies.
